The Singapore Life & Money Roadmap — From Your 20s to Your 60s

Money advice usually arrives as a pile of tips with no sense of when. But the right move at 28 is often the wrong move at 58. Here’s the same journey I walk clients through — what each decade is really about.

Your 20s — build the base

This is the cheapest decade to get cover, and the most valuable decade to start habits. Get basic protection in place while it’s affordable, understand your CPF, and automate a savings habit before lifestyle creep sets in. You don’t need to be clever yet. You need to be consistent.

Your 30s — grow and protect

Marriage, a first home, often a first child. Suddenly other people depend on your decisions. This is when an HDB choice (BTO vs resale), a mortgage, and adequate cover all land at once. The mistake I see most: buying the home and the policies separately, with no one looking at the whole picture together.

Your 40s — optimise

Peak earning years, and the decade things quietly leak. The mortgage you signed may be refinanceable. The portfolio you set at 30 may have drifted. Your parents are ageing, which makes their LPA a now conversation, not a later one. This is the audit decade.

Your 50s — consolidate

Retirement stops being abstract. The work here is tightening: shifting risk where it makes sense, understanding what your CPF will actually pay out, and making the plan legible to the people who’ll one day need to follow it.

Your 60s and beyond — pass it on

Estate planning, CPF nomination, and making sure your will and your wishes line up. The goal is simple: what you’ve built lands where you want it, without friction for the people you leave it to.

The thread through all of it

At every stage the first step is the same — know what you already own. You can’t optimise a picture you can’t see.
